When you bring a Yorkie into your life, you've made a smart choice. You have a smaller sized dog, with a great temperament, who thinks he's a much bigger dog... but still wants to be close to you, and is most happy on your lap. One of the many GREAT things about a small dog is that they do NOT eat as much. Therefore, many Yorkie owners can afford to buy a slightly better quality food. We asked our vet for recommendations, and his response was: "Keep feeding him whatever you're feeding him. By looking at his coat, his energy, and his eyes, I can tell that he's getting what he needs.". And the food that he's getting is Royal Canin's Yorkshire Terrier formula. Yes, that's right - it's designed JUST for Yorkies. Here's how:
... and perhaps most importantly...
OK, healthy ingredients is most important, but our little Toffee eats when we eat. He's totally convinced he's an equal to everyone else in the home (okay, he is). When we sit down to dinner, he goes to his bowl and crunches away nearby. He's happy to do that while we eat, and that means he doesn't beg for our table food. So that's a big help - we avoid feeling guilty for not sharing our food, and he gets to eat something he likes that's good for him and his teeth. What about Puppies? Royal Canin has two versions of their Yorkie-specific food: Adult (for dogs over 10 months) and Puppy (for dogs up to 10 months). Puppies need a separate blend as they have a need for slightly different ingredients to help them grow - and what a great way to give them a head start on a long and happy life!) Adult dogs don't need those extra ingredients, and require others that help them maintain their health without gaining weight. Both of them are Yorkie-specific, and it's nice to have the selection from Royal Canin. What's in it to make it so appetizing and healthy? We're not exactly sure other than what we find in the ingredients list, which doesn't specify the flavor. It's a little on the oily side, which is probably all the ingredients that help with his coat. The aroma - it's not annoying by any means, and you can't smell it unless you get your nose right up close to the container... but it has a slight aroma of salmon or other type of fish scent. That's not surprising to us, because Toffee seems to like fish even more than chicken. Whatever Royal Canin has done, it works. Toffee loves the food, his hair is beautifully shiny and he's happy and healthy with energy to spare. And we feel good knowing it's a quality brand. Waste Less! Another thing that perhaps no one wants to talk about is what comes out the other end of your Yorkie after they eat. Yes, poop! So why does food effect this? Well, if the brand you're using now is full of fillers and non-digestible content, your Yorkie's output is probably a lot larger and harder to pass than food that's mostly used-up because it's digestible. With the right food, your Yorkie will have smaller feces, will be more regular and less frequent, and we've found that the smell is down as well. We notice the difference when Toffee's at a friend's house and good-meaning people slip him snacks, etc. - without us knowing. We do know later - and we prefer to keep Toffee's diet to our Royal Canin kibble. (It may even stop the nasty habit that some owners have stated their little ones do - yuck - because fully-digested feces should have less interest to those poor confused little ones.) Now, here's a couple of tips to help you save money.
This food is offered in 2 bag sizes (and your pet store may only have the small size - after all, it's for Yorkies Only!). There's a 2.5 pound bag, which many pet stores sell for between $12 and $15. You can also buy a 10-lb bag, which is 4 times larger, for about $34 to $40 online (delivered free if you have prime, and pad your order to $35 and it's free shipping!). So, if you're buying it at the pet shop at say, $13.50, 4 bags would be $54 - and you have to go get it (gas is expensive). If you buy it online at $34, you're getting about twice as much for half the price. That is, it's about 25% of the cost - you save 75%. You can click on this sentence to place an order for the 10-lb bag on Amazon using Yorkie World's special link. One more BIG savings tip. Whether you buy the small or large bags, SAVE THE UPC ! (Cut it right off the empty bag and keep them together with a paper clip). Why? Royal Canin will send you a FREE bag for every 10 UPCs you collect. That's right! So, save 10 large bag UPCs and send them in, and you'll get a FREE BAG. Save 10 small UPC bags and you'll get a FREE small bag. That's another 10% off. (Keep the large and small UPC's separate - we suggest you don't send in both large and small ones at the same time unless you don't mind getting a small-sized bag for the mixed sized UPCs you send in). So, that's what we do! We buy the 10-lb bags online and have them shipped to our door for a 75% savings, and we save another 10% by saving the UPCs to send to Royal Canin for a FREE bag. You could even donate the extra bag to a Yorkie cause that could use it and you'll feel great that you're helping other Yorkies. About Switching Food for your Yorkie Dogs can be quite sensitive to food changes, and Yorkies are no exception - in fact, they're likely even more susceptible than most dogs due to their finicky nature and small size. We suggest following the wise advice of doing a slow switch from the previous brand to the new brand. That is, start to mix in the new food along with the old, gradually increasing the amount of the new vs the old over time, until it's 100% the new food. This can take a few days or longer, but it will help your little one adjust to the change in diet. Hope we Helped! We hope this helps our Yorkie World fans who have finicky little Yorkies.
